NSF Expands Food Equipment Portfolio with Electrical Safety Testing and Certification

NSF, a leading global organization dedicated to protecting human health, has expanded its food equipment service portfolio with electrical safety testing and certification.

“For more than 80 years, NSF has paved the way with its sanitation standards and certifications for the food equipment industry,” said Sam Cole, Director of Food Equipment, NSF. “As meeting sanitation and electrical safety requirements is critical to all manufacturers selling products in the US, our broadened scope will allow companies to achieve both more efficiently and under one roof.”

US consumer demand for frozen and chilled food is projected to reach $172 billion by 2033 with an 8.26% CAGR1, creating ample opportunity for commercial food equipment manufacturers. The OSHA NRTL (Occupational Safety and Health Administration Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory) scope expansion enables NSF to test and certify the electrical safety of both commercial and residential food equipment, including refrigerators, freezers, powered equipment and vending machines, among many other categories.

NSF’s electrical safety testing facility in Ann Arbor, Michigan, is a National Recognized Testing Lab (NRTL) by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Testing and certification demonstrates that the product meets National Electrical Code (NEC) safety requirements with a commitment to quality, regulatory compliance and worker protection. The process includes a product sample review, construction evaluation, performance testing and on-site production facility audit.

Certified companies receive a listing of all involved sites and/or certified products and are included on NSF’s online public listing. Certification must be renewed annually and involves two audits annually.

From prototype to production, NSF helps manufacturers, including those hoping to sell products to the US, navigate compliance and prepare equipment for the market. NSF has testing facilities outside of the US, including in Italy and China.
