SAN FRANCISCO, CA, UNITED STATES, September 29, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Menopause is moving from a workplace awareness issue into employment policy.

The Menopause Education Center (MEC) has released its September 2026 Comprehensive Review of Menopause-Related Legislation in the United States, giving employers, HR leaders and benefits teams a centralized view of enacted laws, pending legislation, effective dates and emerging workplace requirements across the country.

For the first time, U.S. employers are beginning to face explicit menopause-related workplace accommodation and anti-discrimination requirements at the state and local level.

Rhode Island enacted the nation’s first state law expressly requiring reasonable workplace accommodations for menopause-related conditions in 2025. Illinois followed with menopause-related workplace protections taking effect January 1, 2027, including accommodations such as flexible schedules and temperature-adjusted workspaces. Philadelphia has also adopted protections covering menstruation, perimenopause and menopause that take effect January 1, 2027.

Additional measures are moving through state legislatures, while proposed federal legislation could further expand workplace protections nationwide. For employers operating across multiple states, the result is an increasingly complex compliance landscape.

“Menopause is moving from an employee wellness conversation into employment policy,” said Rachel Anne, Founder and President of the Menopause Education Center. “For multistate employers in particular, the challenge is knowing which protections apply, when they take effect and whether existing workplace policies are broad enough to address them.”

The MEC report is designed to help HR teams distinguish enacted requirements from pending legislation, identify effective dates and jurisdictions, and evaluate whether existing accommodation, anti-discrimination and manager-training practices are keeping pace. It also includes legislative sponsor information so employers, advocates and constituents can follow proposed measures and engage directly with policymakers.

What Employers Should Be Reviewing Now

As laws evolve, employers may need to examine how menopause intersects with existing workplace practices, including reasonable accommodations, anti-discrimination protections, leave policies, flexible scheduling, workplace temperature and manager response to employee requests.

MEC helps organizations prepare through workplace policy guidance, HR and manager training, evidence-based employee education and Menopause-Friendly Workplace Certification. Employers can also complete MEC’s free Workplace Menopause Audit to identify potential gaps in policies, training and employee support.
